NYCAC Playoffs Heat up on WSRN

After upsetting Philadelphia University in Pennsylvania in last season’s quarterfinal round, Bridgeport remained home this season and pounced on the New York Institute of Technology from the outset, building a 41-26 halftime lead. Jermaine Clark, who drained four three-pointers and led all scorers with 27 points, would not allow the Bears to recover as the Purple Knights captured a 68-56 win. Junior Bryan Evans added 12 in the victory.

Adelphi’s road to Brookville was a struggle as Queens held a 22-21 halftime lead, but the Panthers recovered to post a hard-fought 52-49 victory. Nelson led all scorers with 15, while Thompson, whose free throw with 1:25 remaining snapped a 47-47 tie and gave the Panthers the lead for good, chipped in with 11.

In the nightcap, the host C.W. Post Pioneers, led by 22nd year head coach Tom Galeazzi (412-224), will christen their brand new facility under the pressure of the 2003 NYCAC tournament against conference newcomer New Haven.
The two teams split their two regular season match-ups, with each team winning on their home court.

Back on Nov. 26, C.W. Post opened the Pratt Recreation Center with a 72-62 victory over New Haven. Second-team all-conference guard Ryan Bucci led four Pioneers in double figures with 20, as the hosts shot 50% (11-22) from the field in the final 20 minutes to post the win.

Less than two months later, New Haven, guided by third-year head coach Jay Young, rode the coat-tails of sophomore Jamaal Brooks, who lit the visitors up for 26 points, including 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point stripe. Caro, a first-team all-conference point guard, added seven points and dished out a team-high 10 assists.

C.W. Post improved to 13-0 at home – 14-0 overall – with an 88-76 victory over Molloy in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round. Bucci scored a career-high 31 points to pace the Pioneers, who built a 42-29 halftime lead on 47% field goal shooting and shot 53% the rest of the way. Statam added 24, while freshman Neville Storer chipped in with 13.

New Haven, led by the frontcourt duo of Keith Wright and Jeff Kennerly, who each scored 14 points, defeated visiting Philadelphia 72-59. Caro and senior Alberto Alberdi added 14 and 13 points apiece, all coming in the second half. The Chargers, who shot a sweltering hot 68% (15-22) in the second half, after the teams were deadlocked at 24 at halftime.

Rob Goldenberg will call the play-by-play while Alon Avital will provide color commentary.

Sports Radio Network's live and exclusive coverage of NYCAC basketball will conclude on Saturday afternoon as the NYCAC will crown its 2003 women’s and men’s tournament champions. WSRN’s coverage will get underway at 12:45, with a 15-minute pre-game show, immediately followed by both the women’s and men’s games.
